Sinusitis Treatments

Medications for Sinusitis

The first line of therapy for patients with chronic sinusitis is medical management. Physicians will typically use antibiotics, or antibiotics in combination with other medications:

  • Decongestants to reduce swelling of the lining of the sinus (mucosal swelling)
  • Nasal and systemic steroids to reduce chronic inflammation
  • Mucolytics to help reduce thickened nasal secretions
  • Irrigation to clean out sinuses

Although medications can help address immediate symptoms, they do not correct the narrowed drainage pathways that can be a key underlying cause of chronic sinus infections. For this reason, sinusitis sufferers often find themselves in an ongoing cycle of outbreaks – requiring frequent and ongoing rounds of medications to reduce the impact of symptoms.

Treatments to Address Narrowed Sinus Pathways

For individuals with chronic sinus infections, there are options beyond medications that are designed to reshape narrowed sinus pathways and improve drainage - thereby addressing a key underlying cause of chronic sinusitis.

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)
Functional endoscopic sinus surgery is a surgical procedure used by ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialists to improve sinus drainage by enlarging the drainage pathways. This is done using specialized instruments to remove nasal obstructions and expand the sinus ostia, the natural openings of the sinus. Traditional sinus surgery is an outpatient procedure, with patients returning home the same day.

Balloon Sinus Dilation
Balloon sinus dilation is a minimally-invasive procedure used by ENT
specialists to reshape sinus anatomy by inflating small balloons in key
places in the nose and sinus to expand sinus pathways and restore
drainage. Balloon sinus dilation is performed under local anesthesia
on an outpatient basis, with patients returning home the same day.

Right now, ENT specialists throughout the U.S. are taking part in the REMODEL
Clinical Study. If you suffer from chronic sinusitis, and have not received lasting relief
through medications, this study may be right for you.
